I got the 20″ small for my recently turned five year-old for Christmas and she loves it. We do too. We bought her the 14″ last September but she has outgrown it. It is and was a great bike, as are all Isla Bikes, but this is even better because now it has gears and larger wheels making it even easier to go up hills and it allows her to bike for longer periods. She is also old enough to understand now how to use the hand breaks. She goes biking along side me while I go running and where before I had to give her pushes up hills she now is able to do much of it on her own. I will say that although my daughter learned to bike without training wheels at 3 years and 3 months old she is a complainer and not that strong so Isla Bikes enable her to go further and up hills and gives her confidence. I know they are expensive but so worth it for your young ones to develop confidence and skill on a bike. If you are an active family then there is nothing better than an Isla Bike. I learned the hard way by buying heavy bikes from other stores and randomly discovered Isla Bikes and would never consider another type for my child.

Bought the 20 small for my son Christmas of 2014. First impressions were 5 stars. Fit and finish were superb with clean welds. I do not think there is a lighter weight bike for the money. My son LOVES this bike. It has the gears but still has the feel of a BMX that he can jump and have fun on. His friends mocked the Islabikes name until he smoked them on it because it is half the weight of the tanks they were riding. Now that it has been over a year since he has had it I have to take away one star because the shifting got out of wack jumping gears, and not shifting cleanly into gear right away. I had it tuned and It did not stay in tune long and it is a problem again. The seat is also terrible. I understand the quest for low weight but I think they should have added a few ounces to the seat so my son can still have children when he is older. I am glad to see Islabikes has added colors because at the time I bought this one you could have any color you wanted as long as it was red. I also hate the Presta valves on the tires but a cheap adapter took care of those. Overall this is an excellent bike and worth every penny. If you want your kids to enjoy riding, and use their bike more, and smoke all the other kids in the neighborhood skip the Walmart junk and buy them an Islabike. I raced BMX as a kid and I know that light weight is the single most important factor.

i just purchased my 4th Islabike for my kids over the span of the past 3 years. They are awesome. As a dedicated bike rider myself, i can appreciate the quality of the product and the practical consideration that goes into the design. The price is not cheap, but you get what you pay for. These bikes can be handed down, sold, etc as they hold up for a long time. They are significantly lighter than cheaper bikes which makes a huge difference in my kids’ enjoyment of biking, riding up hills (me carrying the bikes), etc, etc. Glad to see the different colors, since i had to paint an older version since my twins did not want the “same bike”…. Also recommend the fenders (on the 20+) since it keeps the kids much cleaner. Another recommendation is to buy the spare tube when you make a purchase since i had a tough time finding one of the proper size when we had a flat. Keep up the good work.

After watching our 5 year old struggle with a heavy beginner bike, we purchased the Cnoc 16. The lighter weight, and smaller handle grips have really made learning how to ride much more fun. Money well spent. Thank you!

I purchased the 20″ small for my five year old. She just fits on it with the seat almost all the way down so there is lots of room to grow. Like others I did wonder if the price was worth it, but took a chance because I just could not buy another of those princess bikes that are not built well. This bike is absolutely beautiful and so well made. It is nicer than I actually expected. The parts are all very good quality, the bike is stunning in the orangey red and my daughter loves it. I especially love the wheels; a great hybrid of a road and off trail tire. Perfect for a kid who will go from the street to grass to a mountain bike trail. It took my daughter an hour or two to get used to this bike because it was a bit bigger than her last one and it is much faster with each pedal so the power of it took time to learn. I would buy an adult version of an Islabike if they sold it. Bravo for a quality product.

We purchased a Beinn 20 Small 2 years ago for my (then) 6 year old daughter. We live in a hilly area and the gears really helped her conquer some of the bigger climbs. The bike is beautiful and the proportionally sized parts really help kids fit on the bike correctly. The frame, bars, grips, levers, crank, seat and even the pedals are kid-sized.

Now after 2 years of use and abuse I cleaned the bike, handed it down to my younger daughter (6 yo) and purchased a Beinn 24 for the (now) 8 year-old. The Beinn 20 still looks new and my youngest is delighted to have gears.

From what i can see on our local family biking group, the resale of these bikes is very high so it’s difficult to argue that the cost is that much higher than a cheap, junky kids bike. The weight, fit, parts quality, and durability is well worth the cost.

We love this company, and their products. We purchased 14,16, small 20 next will be big 20! I do believe this is one of the best bikes on the market for kids. My son has special needs and also low muscle tone, He handles his bike perfectly.

Islabikes are outstanding. From my experience they are the best child’s bike on the market hands down. We purchased the Beinn 20 small for our 5 year old 2.5 years ago and he has loved it and so have we. They are designed from the ground up with small sized components unlike most children’s bikes that use more cost effective standard adult components but on a smaller frame. But the best part is their relative light weight. Ours is only 17 lbs. Every comparable name brand children’s bike I looked at (Trek, Diamondback, Schwinn, Giant, Raleigh, etc) were all 5-10 pounds heavier. For a child who only weighs about 40-50 pounds themselves a 5-10 pound difference is gigantic. It would be like an adult bike weighing 50 pounds heavier. Try to ride that and you would be frustrated very quickly. And it wouldn’t be safe to ride a 100 pound bike. Neither is it safe for them to ride a bike that weighs 1/2 of what they do. Finding and getting the lightest possible bike for a child makes all the difference. Islabikes are the lightest I could find. Our son immediately was able to go up hills and across terrain he had always given up on before. We have handed it down to his younger sister and she immediately took off with it. She was so excited to have gears. We had started her on the Cnoc 14 when she was only 3 and she learned to ride it in short order. But having the gears was superb.

My son wanted a front shock because he thinks they look cool. He does not need a shock because he is so light weight it doesn’t do him any good and add about 5 lbs to the weight. Don’t get one with shocks.

Trying to decide, This was a helpful review Yes, they are expensive and it seems hard to justify the expense when they are kids and will only use it for a short while. But it is the difference between learning the joy of riding and riding it every chance he got or having the bike sit around most of the time because it is too heavy and so much work to go up the hills. He has ridden it so much he wore out the first set of break pads in two years.

The only down side is that they do not grow with the child and he has outgrown the bike. 🙁

Highly recommended!!! I bought this bike for my 12 year old daughter (now 13) who has dwarfism. She’s very active and enjoys riding bikes but as she gotten older the bikes that fit her are kiddish and do not perform very well. It was incredibly difficult to find a bike that fit her properly, performed well (gears were a must!) and looked age appropriate. The appearance & quality of the components on the Beinn 20 exceeded expectations!!! She is very proud of her new bike! Also, the Islabikes team has been very responsive and helpful to help me find the right model & size for her.
